Double Helix Swing - a digital work of art with HoloProTM in the Wallraf Richartz Museum

It sounds exciting: ”an installation for swarms of gnats on river banks and shallow waters” - this is how the artist Ursula Damm describes her digital work of art, which could recently be admired in the Wallraf Richartz Museum & Fondation Corboud in Cologne. But this is not sufficient to describe what it’s really all about …

To put it simply: ”double helix swing” is used to conduct research into gnats. The observations, recorded by outside cameras, are sent to a computer via a wireless module. From there, the gnat videos can be transmitted to a second computer, on which special picture generation software with virtual creatures is running. The digital work of art is used to learn more about where gnats dwell, how they swarm etc. The installation enables visitors to gain insight into a research topic in a way that is both playful and aesthetic.

This unusual application was visualised as a large-screen projection on a 67-inch HoloProTM mirror screen provided for the artistic application by G+B pronova. The contacts, and subsequently the cooperation, came about via the Media Art College in Cologne. The peculiarity of the mirror screen is that the projection takes place as a front projection, meaning that the screen can be hung on the wall like a picture. And the brilliant picture quality was not inhibited in the slightest by the bright ambient light in the museum. Both the mirror screen and all other products from G+B pronova are designed for daylight use.
